Funny Money v. Housing Cost
|
by PAL Staff
No, we're not talking about the game of Monopoly. Funny Money refers to money generated from the stock market or stock options in a short period of time. To the owner, the money usually does not seem real because it wasn't earned over a period of time with hard work. In Silicon Valley, as you can imagine, due to a lot of dot com companies and hi-tech companies, funny money is a common phenomenon.
So what does that has to do with housing cost in the Palo Alto area? Well, let's say you are one of the lucky funny money owners and you found a dream home in Palo Alto's Professorville area. The asking price is $1M and you know there are other interested buyers eyeing the same piece of property. Knowing your pocket is loaded with money that you earned from selling some hot hi-tech stocks, you probably wouldn't mind adding $100,000 or more just to secure the dream home. Because of that, the average sales price for homes in Santa Clara County consistently exceeds the asking price by a significant amount.
