Lee de Forest
by PAL Staff

Lee de Forest invented the audion in Palo Alto in 1906 at Channing Ave and Emerson Street. The audion is a vacuum tube that amplifies a weak electrical signal into a larger one. Forest's invention allowed AT&T to install phone services more efficiently across the country. It was also used in common home electronics such as radios and televisions.

Bill Hewlett & David Packard
by PAL Staff

Bill Hewlett and David Packard began to work in their garage on Addison Avenue in 1938 where they produced the audio oscillators for the Walt Disney film "Fantasia".

William Hewlett was born in Michigan but moved to San Francisco when he was three years old. He studied electronics at Stanford University. As a graduate student, he developed an oscillator which became the foundation of his partnership with David Packard. David Packard was born and raised in Colorado. As a young licenced amateur radio operator, he was interested in radio and electronic engineering and went to Stanford University. David Packard managed the company he and Hewlett formed while Hewlett went to the Army.

Hewlett-Packard is now one of the largest employers in Palo Alto with over 5,000 employees. It manufactures electronic test instruments and computer equipment.
