Bicycle Riding - Mountain Bike
|
by PAL Staff
There are a lot of great off-road bike trails in the midpeninsula area. One of the best trails is on the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. The parking lot is at the North-West corner of Skyline Blvd and Page Mill Road. From there, you can ride down Alpine Road (continuation of Page Mill Road) and get on the preserve about 1/2 mile from the parking lot. Ride North on the Ancient Oaks Trail towards Ridge Trail. Make a right on Ridge Trail and head South. Half a mile later you'll see Borel Hill. Get on top of the hill and enjoy the 360-degree view at 2,572 feet. Continue down Ridge Trail and you'll be back at the parking lot. Total distance is about 3 miles. Call the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District at (650) 691-1200 for more information.

Bicycle Riding - Road Bike
|
by PAL Staff
If you like speed, Foothill Expressway in Palo Alto and Los Alto is where you want to ride. A word of caution, you'll be sharing the expressway with fast moving cars so be extra cautious expecially when crossing intersactions.
If you want to test your endurance, a ride on Page Mill Road from Interstate 280 to Skyline Blvd (Hwy 35) is guaranteed to give your heart a good workout. This steep route can be dangerous too if you're not skillful enough to co-exist with motor vehicles on this narrow, twisted two-lane road. So be careful!
For a more relaxing ride, go to Shoreline Park at the North end of Shoreline Blvd. It has bike paths that are completely separated from motor vehicles. You get to visit the wildlife too!

How an Ice Rink Works?
|
by Marshall Brain, How Stuff Works
You've no doubt thrilled at the speed and agility of great athletes skating on indoor ice. But you've probably taken for granted the surface that makes it all possible. Nevertheless, the temperature and other characteristics of the surface can make the difference between a gold-medal performance and an embarrassing spill. Indoor ice rinks are used for all sorts of sports and recreational activities, including hockey, figure skating, and speed skating, and in all of these sports the quality of the ice makes a big difference. Visit HowStuffWorks.com to read on.
