There is only one Singaporean restaurant in the Palo Alto area that we are aware of. Please let us know if you know of another one.
Straits Cafe

by Amy Taylor
Straits Cafe serves authentic Singapore food. If you don't know what Singaporean food is, here's a list of dishes: Nyonya Daging Rendang, Kari Ayam, Bijang, Tahu Goreng, Ikan Pangang, Nasi Goreng, Kway Pai Ti, Murtabak, Samosa, etc. Still puzzled? Try this...
- Nyonya Daging Rendang - Singapore spiced flat iron steak with kaffir lime sauce and sauteed greens.
- Kari Ayam - Boneless breast of chicken simmered in Singapore-style yellow curry with potatoes and carrots.
- Bijang - Sweet and sour eggplant sauteed with mixed peppers.
- Tahu Goreng - Tofu topped with cucumber, beansprouts and a sweet and spicy peanut sauce.
- Ikan Pangang - Salmon filet with pureed fresh chili, lemongrass, garlic and onion wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled.
- Nasi Goreng - Spicy fried coconut rice with prawns and mixed vegetables.
- Kway Pai Ti - Dainty pastry shells filled with jicama, carrots, and prawns topped with our special chili sauce.
- Murtabak - Roti prata filled with spiced minced beef and onions, served with a curry dipping sauce.
- Samosa - Vegetarian curry savories delicately wrapped, served with a garlic chili sauce.
Nice atmosphere. The food is presented very decorative, just like the interior design. Some dishes can be on the spicy side. So ask before you order if you cannot tolerate spicy food.
They also have a full selection of wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Champagne, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Red Wine, Sauvignon Blanc, Sparkling Wine, White Wine, and Zinfandel.
Straits Cafe is located on 3295 El Camino Real near Page Mill Road in Palo Alto. They have another location in San Francisco. Call 650-494-7168 for reservation.
