Good Earth is Closing
by PAL Staff

After over 25 years in business, The Good Earth Restaurant on 185 University Avenue is closing its door on Sunday, September 9, 2001 due to high rent. This came as a shock to both customers and employees. Only a few days notice was given. No words on who will take its place at the corner of University and Emerson.

by Bob — July 2001

Future Fantasy Bookstore
by Bob — July 2001

The Future Fantasy bookstore on El Camino is going out of business after more than 15 years. They no longer can compete with the big chains like Borders or on-line operations like Amazon. Unlike Amazon, Future Fantasy has to make a profit to stay open. This is the last independent seller of new books in Palo Alto. Used book stores like Bell's still remain, www.acme.com/jef/construction but they don't compete with Amazon or Borders.

The owner of the space would like to replace Future Fantasy with a retail store that meets our local needs. He would value comments from the neighborhoods on what kinds of retail they feel are missing, and would be willing to patronize. Local rather than chain stores are preferred, but any suggestions are welcome.

The space available is 1600 sq. ft. He does not want a restaurant or food service because the added insurance for such an operation would require a significant increase in rent. He noted that he'd love Harmony Bakery, but if they actually baked on-site he is afraid of insurance and liability costs.

What types of retail do you want and would be willing to patronize? Please respond to me and I'll tabulate the answers and pass them on. You can mention a number of uses, and if you rank them in order of preference I'll report them that way. BTW, I'll also post the results once we have a significant response.

Stanford Shopping Center Constr.
by PAL Staff

www.acme.com/jef/construction Why are they tearing up the North end of Stanford Shopping Center's parking lot? What's with all those constructions along Sand Hill Road? It is called the Stanford Sand Hill Road Projects. These projects are designed to expand Stanford Shopping Center, ease traffic, provide senior housing, and provide rental housing.

Shopping Center Expansion
This project will add retail space for more shops, a parking structure, and reconfiguration of vehicle access. Remember the shopping madness during Christmas time? Hopefull this project will help ease some of the pain.

www.acme.com/jef/construction Traffic Improvement
This project will connect Sand Hill Road to El Camino Real. It will also widen part of the the two-land Sand Hill Road to four lanes. It will add bicycle and pedestrian trails.

Senior Housing
A senior housing complex will be built on 20+ acres. This new community will provide 388 living units. It will have a health center, a nursing facility, common dining room, library, swimming pool, and a gym.

Apartment Housing
The apartment complex consists of 628 units. The units are designated for Stanford University employees and other onsite workers. It will have a community center, gym, swimming pools, and a day care center.
